LONELY TOURIST SIR, I AM A GOOD MAN INDEPENDENT, 2011
Paul Tierney is from Glasgow but is based in Bristol. A year ago, he released Sir, I Am A Good Man, his highly enjoyable debut album, available for download on bandcamp.
Actually it's an exquisite and brilliant collection of songs. Extremely strong when it comes to lyrics; profoundly touching when it comes to melodies.
(Mostly) acoustic tunes with strumming guitars accompanied by wise lyrics and gorgeous orchestrations (claps are included). The best example is 'Watch for the Sharks'.
An indie pop album that gets you for its vibrant melancholy and Tierney's ability to put thoughts into lyrics (his scottish accent just makes things even easier to fall for).
Achingly underrated.

For the past 12 years, 5 albums were released. An incredible collection of sometimes acoustic, sometimes indiepop, sometimes rock songs...
The unique songwriting of vocalist Gordon McIntyre goes from heartbreaking love songs to sex boredom and everyday casualties. Always highlighting an extremely creative set of characters.
The great John Peel featured several tracks from the band in his Festive Fifty specials and recorded a Christmas special from the legendary Peel Acres: the house he used to live and where he sometimes broadcasted his radio shows and recorded live performances from bands.
The band will release new material in 2012.

today's the day to talk about an indie pop band from east kilbride, scotland that was born after the reunion of former members from meat whiplash and the shop assistants back in the days of 1987.
in fact, the motorcycle boy is formed by all members of meat whiplash that - with the addiction of vocalist alex taylor from the shop assistants - changed their name.
this is their third single and was released by chrysalis records. before that, they've released one single on rough trade (their debut, called 'big rock candy mountain') and 'trying to be kind', also on chrysalis.
"they recorded one john peel session and their debut single 'big rock candy mountain' reached no.22 in the annual festive fifty conducted by listeners to john peel's show. none of their singles charted in the uk, and were not released in the us. Their only album, starlet - comprising songs from 'you and me against the world' and trying to be kind' was shelved."
in 1990, the band split up...

tracyanne and the band come back in a forth album (that'll be released on april, 20) with more sugar, love, melancholy and addictive pop. after the success of their previous album with songs like 'lloyd, i'm ready to be heartbroken', 'let's get out of this country' and 'if looks could kill' they're back with an album that reminds their two first albums: relaxing, easy listening, melodic and cute... extremely cute.
the pianos are there... the ringing guitars are there... and tracyanne's sugary voice is there.
music that will take the sensitive ones and make them sing along and dance...
here's what tracyanne said about the album in a press release:
“some people who have heard it say it’s intense and quite dark. i suppose it is in a way. we were even more open and brave when making it than we were with the last record. i’ve never been so brutal when its come to writing lyrics. i wouldn’t even call them lyrics. just documentation of what was going on with me for a while. i truly believe it’s the best we’ve done so far.”
since the album hasn't been released yet i won't make available all songs. i chose three songs - you have no idea how hard it was:
french navy: opens the album with uplifting melody and tracyanne singing "spent a week in a dusty library/ waiting for some words to jump at me"... five seconds after that you'll be dancing and certain that'll spend 35-40 minutes in a state of joy mixed with melancholy, naivety and love.
james: a heartbreaking ballad that'll make you feel like falling in love with some guy called james and have your heart broken just to suffer listening to this song.
my maudlin career*: the classic camera obscura slow pace song (with piano lines to die for).

an "electronic scottish pop unit" formed by two girls, two boys and a genious producer. this is their second release after the acclaimed (specially in usa) northern electric.
the previous release was downtempo and folkish but this time they come with an album with stronger beats and louder guitars with clear flirtations with shoegaze. nintendo sounds and guitars that sound like bagpipes turn the whole thing even more interesting in contrast with the simple (sometimes hypnotic) lyrics.
collaborations vary from peel session veterans persil, japanese singer mayuto and minnesota's tiger, tiger. two tracks were also used in michael baumgarten's movie 'last call before sunset'.
tracks like the hypnotic 'skyflowers' and the popish 'stay here instead' are true gems... the future is represented with 'retrogamer' and its vocals recorded with vocoder.
this is french and european electro making love with c86.
