Klaus & Kinski is a band from Murcia, Spain and since 2008 they've been casting a spell of fragility, loud guitars, emotional melodies and phenomenal skill to mixture musical styles. Their albums have a profound collection of songs that travel through shoegaze, rumba, bossa nova and electronic sounds. And the most interesting thing to note about that is how cohesive this mixture of different genres sounds.
Alejandro Martínez is the guy who writes the songs and take care of arrangements. His lyrics deal with subjects from History - citing demons (like the nazi dr. Mengele in the beautiful 'Mengele y el amor') and heros (Bakunin, the russian anarchist political theorist); the fear of death and, of course, love.
Two years and two albums later (both released under the great Jabalina Musica), Klaus & Kinski is one of the pillars of the vibrant contemporary spanish indie scene.

We talked with Marina, the sweet voice breathing life to Alejandro's words. She talks about their origins, the many music styles inside their music, inspirations and about their new album, due to be released in 2012.


01. How did you got together and decided to start a band? And by the name of the band I assume you are big fans of the german actor Klaus Kinski… how did you get to the name?

We met on a disco parking, three days before 09.11 terrorist attack, but we started to make songs during 2006. Actually we are not fans of Klaus Kinski, but we liked his name and angry face. We thought "klaus&kinski" was stupid enough to sound cool.

here i am, back with the blog... and for some time i've been thinking about what would be the best way to come back. last night i had the answer: i found an (apparently) unnoficial album by klaus & kinski that is filled with recordings made before the release of the great 'tú hoguera está ardiendo'. since the first post of the blog was their debut album, i think it is great to come back again with them.
the band started a few years ago recording covers of songs they like so it's great to hear what they were up to before the full lenght album.
here you'll find 8 songs, all covers... i mean, all amazing covers. so amazing that, for a few minutes, songs from abba, the beatles, kikí d'akí and omd seem to be original songs by klaus & kinski. simply great and beautiful...
(don't forget to check the highlight of the ep 'ritmo de la noche', a cover from a dance argentine duo from the early 90's called the sacados).

what really surprises me about this debut album from murcia (spain) band is that it's extremely bold and daring without being pretentious. from the first to the forth track they go from lovely, calm indiepop to shoegaze to electronicpop (which is ironic when the song's called 'rocanrolear', something like rocknrolling) and when the fourth song starts you may think "what the fuck...?" because you certainly will ask yourself what this band is about when you hear a bolero driven song.
the album goes on, track after track, surprising you. showing the wide range of influences and references with no fear of being labeled as insecure and/or naive. and even when it sounds naive in tracks like 'flash-back al revés' and 'en la cama', marina's voice feels like honey dripping to your ears.
the lyrics don't have a specific subject and it's quite hard to say "ok, this song talks about this and that song is about that". it's more like creating a feeling using clever, simple and sensitive sentences. of course there's love, suicide, cute naivety, excitement for rides in trucks at albacete highway...
this extremely mature debut is one of my favorite 60 minutes of the year.
