the chaotisch days #6. vast and wild

Download the file or listen here:

In the beginning, it was vast and wild. It was the promise of an entire summer.

Featuring:
• Barnabys from Philadelphia and their incredible, vibrant guitars. 'Global Teen' is part of the EP Delightful Browns, released in 1992 via spinART.
• French Films, from Finland,  just released White Orchid (2013) , their second album and it is gooooood. Out via GAEA Records.
• Daniel Johnston and Yo La Tengo with an awesome version of Johnston's 'Speeding Motorcycle', released as a single in 1990.
• Gentlemen Marry Brunettes is a dreampop group from the Philipines. Their music is inspired by "airline crashes and space poetry".
• Möscow Çlub is a band from Japan. 'Bikinikill' is a lovely piece of summery guitar indiepop with reverbed vocals.
• Holiday is a band formed in Yale and active between 1992-1997. 'Candy' is part of Cafe Reggio (1997), released via spinART and Siesta Records.
• Tullycraft's back after 5 years. New album out via FortunaPOP!
• Adam and Darcie's version of The Very Most is part of an EP released via Village Collective (formed also by Canoe and The Very Most). Recently, I wrote about these release. Check the blog.
• Archaster is an artists from Valenzuela City, Philipines. 'Kissing Ballade' could've been recorded by Stephin Merritt.
• Northern Portrait's 'Happy Nice Day' is part of their EP Pretty Decent Swimmers (2013), out via Matinée Records.
• Fear Of Men is definitely one of the most hyped independent bands from 2013. 'Born' is part of their compilation/album Early Fragments.
•Velcro is from Melbourne, Australia. A mystery, actually.
•La Ola Que Quería Ser Chau is a band from Argentina. Fun, bright and loud indiepop.
• The Sweets' dreamy psychedelia is part of a free download, out via Bleeding Gold Records.
• The Snowdrops is a group (supergroup, an indiepop kid could say) formed by members of Lovejoy and Blueboy with Pam Berry (The Pines, The Shapiros, Black Tambourine and many other groups).

the chaotisch days. 5

Today is this little boy's birthday.
He turned 29 today.
He runs this blog and wants to share 29 songs with you.

the chaotisch days 3

Here's a collection of songs to celebrate teenagery feelings, angst, hopes and dreams.
The idea came while I was watching a (great!) british comedy show from the early 80's of the same name.
The opening track is the actual song from the opening credits of the series; an addictive short version of Cliff Richards' 'The Young Ones', sang by the cast of the series.
You'll find lots of independent artists... new stuff, old stuff, obscure stuff and classic stuff.
'Young' is a state of mind and spirit. I solemnly believe that music plays a big part on keeping things new, fresh and... well... young; always looking to the horizon for what's to come; fearless and sometimes ignoring risks and consequences.
STAY YOUNG! AND ENJOY!

the chaotisch days 2

In our 2nd edition of The Chaotisch Days we have lots of Firestation Records (totally unconscious) with Men Of Westenesse, Hey Paulette and The Soulboy Collective, a C86 vibe permeating the songs, some obscure bands like the Australian girls from The Foots, the Hungarian one man band Evil Men Have No Songs and Du Nord (from Paris), and the warm happiness of the summer to be.

THE CHAOTISCH DAYS 1 IF THE RAVENS LEAVE (PODCAST)

When I first started the blog, back in 2008, one of the things that I was most excited about was to create mixtapes. As a frustrated musician - since I don't play anything - and a frustrated DJ - since I don't really go out much, mixtapes are all I have left. And mixtapes keep it satisfied. By now.

The idea behind 'The Chaotisch Days' is to bring back to the blog (and ultimately my life) the lovely art of putting songs together. And also there's the 'documenting' factor: the new mixing with the old and the layers of memories and feelings being accessed again and rearranged. Anyway...
I'm not sure if this will be a monthly or weekly segment. All I know is that there'll be more.

V.A. COLOREANDO A DANIEL JOHNSTON (LA HISTORIA DE UN ARTISTA)

We have the awful habit of labeling as crazy people that see things differently (ok, now I'm practically plagiarizing Apple's ad). What I mean is, we are unable to deal, as a society, with the outspoken, original and sensitive ones. The path we chose that led to our current social state has no space for meaningful, and multi-perspective exchanges. And that's our fault.

And from time to time, a particular crazy, misunderstood and lonely voice stands out and produce waves throughout a generation. The 80's and early 90's seemed to be Daniel Johnston's moment. Or maybe Johnston was the voice that better translated the young modern angsts of the 80's-90's kids. And let's be honest: few people embody the unadjusted, troubled and sensitive modern man as good as Johnston.

Last month, a compilation featuring bands from Spain and Latin America was released.

The project (free and non-profitable) was started by two guys from Granada (Spain) with an obvious admiration for Mr. Johnston. Throughout the 18 songs, we get unexpected covers and versions in spanish from an important - and quite underrated - group of contemporary artists from the spanish indie scene (or the indie scene in spanish).

COLOREANDO A DANIEL JOHNSTON (or Coloring Daniel Johnston) features consolidated indie darlings like Los Punsetes, Odio París, Alondra Bentley, Barcelona's greatest La Estrella de David and last year's latin sensation Las Robertas.
(Highlights to underground acts like Varaverde, Capitán Sunrise and Nine Stories).

The compilation is a fuzzy combination of guitar distortion and some pretty interesting and creative takes on Johnston's body of work. The album is part of a zine and is available for free on bandcamp.

MIXTAPE gone for the summer

GONE FOR THE SUMMER A CHAOTISCH UND CHARMANT MIXTAPE

HERE'S TO THE TROPICAL, SUNNY AND BRIGHT ONES.
SUMMER IS A STATE OF MIND.

Here's a collection of great songs from 2011. Lots were left out.
(tracklist inside the player)

the good times we shared at the marina

a catalan compilation - the good times we shared at the marina. mixtape #12

spain has – in my opinion – the most exciting music scene nowadays. it has a great sense of originality and freshness that are always welcome when we are talking about forms of expression. in our 12th mixtape, we land on spanish lands, more specifically, catalonia and even more specifically: barcelona (which has been called the brooklyn of europe for its lively and prolific scene).

the artists sing in spanish and catalan and - in common - they have an awesome approach on how to develop music being universal without forgetting hints of regional tradition.

notes
a. some artists are well known for the regulars here. la estrella de david, la bien querida and joe crepúsculo are big favourites here and work a lot among themselves (in fact junco y diamante is a side project from david and joe and the song 'alt penedès' is in collaboration with la bien querida)------------------------------------
b. we tried to keep a balance between different styles. there's contemporary indie pop, indie rock, folk, eletronic, and groups experimenting with music and other forms of expression (like verdcel with their attempt of combining music and other medias, like theatre)... there's also a wide range of singers/songwriters, since the last years were quite prolific and in some way a revival to the golden age of catalan singer/songwriter scene---
c. queta & teo is a rarity. sister and brother singing songs produced by their father during the 60's on the island of mallorca. little is known about them and there's almost no information available. a big thanks for tweeranosaurus for this amazing discovery. ------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you like it. It was a great experience to create a compilation based on a scene more than in a theme.

mixtape #08

so it's time for our monthly mixtape! and it is being posted today because it's my birthday. yeah, 26 years old... i decided to celebrate the date just like last year: compiling songs and building a mixtape with 26 musics, one for each year i've lived. not that they have some relation with a specific year.
actually the mixtape has this first songs with a positive and romantic view on life - just like when you're a kid and think that life will last forever; then we go through some songs that i feel represent me in some way (well, i think everyone has at least 1,000 songs in that category...) and the end has this tunes with a look on life that is a bit less naive and accepting that everything ends (baby, that's a fact!). so the idea was to build this 'years/life passing' mood, from birth until death.

01. lollipop train - strawberry?

you know, that's the kind of thing that causes accidents

mixtape#7

here's our monthly mixtape. i tried to gather a few songs that i've been listening since the year started. after my last year's musical retrospective, i discovered a lot of things that could easily be among the best songs and albums of the year. unfortunately, it's impossible to catch up with everything in the short period of time that is a year (very subjective, i know, but as the music goes 'days go by so slowly and years go by too fast').
the name of the compilation was taken from the opening track 'beautifulgirlsunnyledges' by money can't buy music, a side project from gordon mcintyre (ballboy). a moving spoken chronicle, trademark of gordon's writing style.
the other 20 tracks are a mixture of happy/gloomy tunes. it is more melancholic than i imagined it would be, but there are some moments that all you'll want to do is jump and jump and jump. so enjoy (!) and be careful, accidents* happen(!).

01. money can't buy music - beautifulgirlsunnyledges
02. le sport - love in stereo
03. the olive shoots - prostitution is gone from the streets

it's berlin. and it's winter.

it's berlin. and it's winter (mixtape #5)

my favorite historical event definitely is the fall of the berlin wall... i get really emotional when i see images of the people celebrating by the wall, crossing the border between east and west...
so for this month's mixtape i made a selection of songs inspired by that. i mean, the selection is a combination of songs from some of my favorite german bands, songs that i was listening when i went to berlin (most of them were listened while taking walks through the tiergarten) and songs recently discovered that i think that go well with berlin.
the opening track is the german hit (almost hymn?) from the cold-war era '99 luftballons' (yeah, i'm that obvious) and closing the mix is the german version of david bowie's 'heroes' (in my opinion, way better than the english version).
